Fundamentally, kinetic energy and potential energy are the two major forms of energy. Kinetic energy alludes to an object’s kinetic energy. Potential energy is the energy that an object has stored because of its position.
On the other hand, these two basic categories of energy can be further divided into a vast array of other types of energy based on circumstances such as how energy is being moved or its generating sources.
In this post, in addition to discussing all kinds of energy, I’ve chosen the greatest top 6 forms of energy along with appropriate examples.

Nuclear energy is the energy produced by the nuclear fusion or nuclear fission processes occurring inside of an atom’s nucleons (which are made up of protons and neutrons).
In other terms, nuclear energy is the energy that originates from an atom’s nucleus. Typically, an atom’s nucleon is where this energy is held captive.
Atoms can either be combined through nuclear fusion or torn apart through nuclear fission to make it.
Nuclear energy is also referred to as Nuclear Binding Energy on occasion. Simply because this energy keeps the protons and neutrons—the building blocks of the nucleus—together. Joule is the metric unit for nuclear energy (J).
Examples of Nuclear Energy
The American bombing of Imperial Japan’s cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War 2 is the best illustration of the use of nuclear energy.
However, as technology in the field of nuclear physics has advanced over time, we now have a great variety of examples or uses of nuclear energy.
Not to add, you are aware of how much electricity we now use in our daily lives. We humans would be nothing without electricity, after all.
Approximately 10 to 12 percent of the world’s electricity is currently produced via nuclear energy.
Indeed, the most significant advantage of nuclear energy in the field of electricity generation is that it is by far the largest low-carbon source of electricity (after hydropower plants).
Certainly, the use of nuclear energy in everyday life is growing at an exponential rate. Other applications of nuclear energy include medical equipment, agricultural and food processing, space exploration, and military vehicles such as Nuclear Powered Submarines, among others.
Sound Energy is the next one on my list of the top six Forms of energy and their examples. Sonic Energy, also known as Sound Energy, is a type of energy that is produced by the vibrations of matter.
Because mechanical waves must travel through a medium, sound energy or sound waves are a common example. The travelling medium can be air, water, wood, or another material.
Sound waves typically have less energy than any other forms of energy. Sound energy is typically measured in decibels or Pascals.
Examples of Sonic Energy
The development of SONAR is by far the best use of sound energy or sound wave. SONAR is an abbreviation for Sound Navigation Ranging.
Indeed, the development of SONAR devices made it possible to detect enemy ships, submarines, and even underwater obstacles.
On the contrary, I sometimes wonder if the sonar device was invented during the Titanic’s sinking. The Titanic would have easily detected the iceberg at that point (obstacle). As a result, instead of colliding with the iceberg and sinking in the North Atlantic Ocean, it could have altered its course.
Aside from the SONAR device, sound energy is used in a variety of industries such as medicine, science, and technology, and music.
Furthermore, there are numerous examples of sound energy in our daily lives, such as a dog barking, a car running, or conversing with a friend.
Mechanical energy is the next on my list of the top 6 different forms of energy and their examples. Not to mention, if you want to understand everything about energy, you must first understand the definition of Mechanical Energy.
Mechanical energy is the energy emitted by an object as a result of its movement or position, or both. It is the most common type of energy that we encounter in our daily lives.
To put it another way, all moving objects generate mechanical energy. Mechanical energy is defined as the sum of kinetic and potential energy. Joule is the SI unit of mechanical energy (J).
Examples Of Mechanical Energy
As I previously stated, it is a combination of kinetic and potential energy, or in some cases only one exists. Let’s see how it goes!
A book on the table, for example, is an example of potential energy. A moving car, on the other hand, is an example of kinetic energy.
Furthermore, a moving car travelling up in the mountains has both kinetic and potential energy. For a better understanding, refer to the diagram above.
Thermal energy is the next on my list of the top six types of energy and their examples. Not to mention that thermal energy is also known as heat energy.
The energy of a thermodynamic system that results from the movement of tiny particles or molecules to or from the thermodynamic system is referred to as heat energy. Heat energy can thus be transferred from one object to another.
The greater the movement or vibration of tiny particles or molecules, the greater the temperature gain. As a result, the greater the heat transfer from one object to another, the greater the generation of heat energy.
Because of its relationship to temperature change, heat energy is also known as thermal energy. Joule is the SI unit of heat (J).
Examples of Thermal (Heat) Energy
Despite this, Thermal or Heat Energy has a wide range of applications. However, in my opinion, solar energy used for cooking or other household tasks is the best example of thermal energy.
In other words, the sun’s energy is the best source of heat energy. In fact, it is by far the most efficient source of heat on the planet.
Aside from solar energy, other examples of thermal energy include the combustion of fossil fuels such as gasoline, diesel gasoline, and so on as automobile fuels.
In terms of natural thermal energy resources, hot springs and geysers are natural thermal energy sources.
These natural resources are derived from the interior of our planet. That is why they are also known as Geothermal Energy Sources.
Electrical energy is a type of energy that is created by electrons moving through a material (conductor). In general, there is no electrical energy in any material.
Unless and until we force electrons to move in a particular direction. Then and only then can electricity be generated and flow through an electric conductor.
Examples of Electrical Energy
One of the most common and useful forms of energy is electrical energy. Not to mention that you are well aware of the obvious reason for it.
The most common use of electricity is to light our homes and power our household appliances. Nowadays, everyone is aware of electric vehicles.
In fact, it is one of the best examples of electrical energy utilization. However, when it comes to Natural Electrical Energy examples, Thunder Lightning is the best example of a natural source of electrical energy.
Chemical energy is the last but not least in my list of the top six different types of energy and their examples. Chemical energy is a type of stored energy in chemical substances.
This energy is released or absorbed during a chemical reaction when chemical bonds are formed or broken. Chemical substances contain all of the information about chemical energy.
Chemical reactions easily convert chemical energy into other types of energy. In fact, they are frequently released as heat (thermal energy) or light.
Chemical reactions are classified into two types. These are known as endothermic and exothermic chemical reactions, respectively.
Examples of Chemical Energy
The most basic application of chemical energy is the use of batteries. I mean, they’re everywhere these days.
We convert chemical energy into electrical energy using batteries. On the other hand, we can use chemical energy in the form of fossil fuels, such as the combustion of gasoline or coal.
Biomass, wood, gasoline, coal, natural gas, and other forms of stored chemical energy are also examples. To put it another way, chemical energy is one of the best examples of stored energy.
Other Forms of Energy
Other than the top six forms of energy, there are other types of energy. Radiant energy, motion energy, elastic energy, gravitational energy, rest energy, magnetic energy, and so on are examples.
So, in my opinion, the six different types of energy I discussed in this article are the most appropriate. Not only are they the best, but they are also the most commonly used, particularly in our daily lives.
